Graduating from university is always an exciting and nervous time for any young graduate. After working hard to complete your degree, you must now demonstrate the skills you have learnt -in the real world.
I was lucky enough to start work with an amazing consulting company: Assetivity. Assetivity is a well-renowned consulting and training organisation that specialises in physical asset management and maintenance.
I applied at Assetivity to work alongside a good friend who had recently started as a vacation student. I was keen on the idea of consulting -the idea that you can use your problem-solving skills on a wide range of projects, for many different companies, across multiple industries. I didn’t have much of an idea of what exactly asset management was when I joined, but I knew it was engineering related, so I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to grow and learn.
When I first arrived, I was swept away by the knowledge and experience of my new colleagues. I was working alongside consultants who had worked around Australia and the world on many different engineering and asset management related projects. This kind of exposure to such qualified team members has really helped to fast-track my own learning and development.
A few things I really appreciated when I first joined, and continue to, are the flexible work hours, the coaching and personal development available, the variation in work, the continuous learning, and the balance of the office environment with on-site work.
I have been lucky enough to have been part of the Assetivity team to work on several projects for clients such as BHP, Rio Tinto (Oyu Tolgoi), Water Corporation, Newgen Power and Nyrstar.
The work I have assisted so far with has been diverse, ranging from helping conduct a Maintenance Audit, assist with FMEA/RCM/PM Program Development, providing support for an Operational & Maintenance Readiness project, and helping conduct a Hands on Tool Time study at a multi-metals processing facility.
As quite a shy person when I arrived, I have enjoyed the challenge to develop my own communication skills through the frequent client liaison and working in a supportive and collaborative environment. It has been very rewarding to see organisations get value out of the hard work you put in to assist them with their asset management endeavours, and I look forward to tackling more challenging work in the future.
Having been at Assetivity on and off for 18 months now, transitioning from a vacation student to a graduate consultant, I say to anyone thinking about getting into consulting, or joining Assetivity, I 100% recommend it!
